In many industries downtime is money lost is a cliché but is certainly true in any industry that relies on mobile railcars.
A mobile railcar is the vehicle that moves railroad boxcars and tankers and such around rail yards, or in an out of grain elevator properties or construction sites. If one breaks down mid-job, it can be quite costly if there is no other way to move the cars.
That’s where a company like K & L Equipment, Inc. comes in. The Mt. Pulaski-based firm is quickly becoming a leader in the rail of mobile railcars throughout Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Ohio, Tennessee and Kentucky.
Owner Ken Lowe began K & L in 2005 when he saw a need for this type of service in the region and decided to use his 30+ years of experience as a diesel mechanic, repairing mobile railcars and other heavy equipment.
He began the company with one service truck and one mechanic – himself. The brightly painted yellow service truck stood out in the railcar yards with the company logo placed on the drivers’ door. With the vehicles’ professional look and Ken’s experience and solid reputation it allowed his business to grow.
Today, K & L has six employees and its trained tech crew is on-call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year! The company specializes in Trackmobile, Shuttlewagon, Switchmaster and recently added Boss brands of mobile railcars. The industries they serve are ethanol plants, grain elevators, grain processing plants and any where else that relies on rail car movement for their operations.
